What were you afraid of as a child that seems silly to you now?
Submitted by navelgazer.
Well, that's pretty easy: The shark on my closet shelf. It was actually some clothes or something, but in the dark by the glow of the moon, there was a Great White on my shelf, waiting for me to get close enough to eat.
On the flipside, I'm a little creeped out by the basement in our two-flat. It's got a very weird vibe, and every time I open the door to our storage space, I expect there to be a snarling monster on the other side.
In honor of Vox's launch tomorrow, what's your favorite feature or aspect of Vox?
I love the fact that I can set privacy levels so thoroughly with Vox. It's great that there's a distinction made between friends and family -- no other service that I know of offers that, but if I were a teenager again and my whole family had Vox accounts, that would have come in incredibly handy.
What's your favorite restaurant?
I of course have two.
One is Tanoshii, home of the amazing Sushi Mike, whose handiwork you see to the right. Some of the best sushi I've ever had, and I've had a good amount of sushi. He's very creative and experimental, and most of his rolls require (and in fact he specifically requests) no soy sauce.
Sushi Mike is the kind of chef who inspires a cult following. He's had some disagreements with his silent partner (the guy with the money) and has talked about closing Tanoshii and opening his own place; if he does, you can bet a huge portion of his dining audience will follow him.
Their specialty is breads: they make more than a dozen types of naan, paratha and chapati, some with fillings like potato or beef, others made out of grains such as millet. I usually order an aloo (potato) paratha with my meal. Among my favorite dishes -- I've yet to have a bad one -- is the butter chicken, chunks of chicken simmered in a tomato-based sauce with just a hint of spiciness. Other faves include the haleem, the chicken briyani and the fish pakoda. Bhabi's will be featured on the new season of "Check Please!" so hurry in before the crowds get awful.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Great googly-moogly, I am not a morning person. Left to my own devices, I'd probably get up around 10:30am.
On the other hand, I have little trouble staying up late. I really should get to bed earlier, though; 1:30-2am is not good for someone with a day job.
What's your favorite foreign accent?
I like many, but my favorite is probably the Indian accent. There's something about the particular Indian version of the Queen's English, with its clipped pace and soft /t/ that I really like. I confess: I have a voice crush on Snigdha Prakash from NPR.
What's your motto?
Carpe diem, motherfucker.
Q: What is your browser's default home page set to?
A: Google. But the more interesting answer is, I automatically open four tabs and another window when I launch my browser. The four tabs are: Gapers Block, GB's MT login, the GB staff blog (private) and Gmail.
The new window will be one of a couple destinations, depending on the time of day, location (work or home), etc. Typically it'll be del.icio.us/tag/chicago, Flickr or Metachat.
What's your favorite way to keep in touch? Phone, snail mail, email, text message, Vox, _____ ?
In order: Phone, email, text message, Flickr message, snail mail, Vox, sending word through Cinnamon.
