What jessamyn said.

I have a niece who sends stuff like that around (most of it is out of the goodness of her heart, but she's woefully ignorant in political matters). There was a family kerfuffle when my uncle responded point-by-point to the inaccuracies of the email. Her father (not my brother, he's her step-father) got all frothy and demanded to be taken off of the email list. He shut up once he was reminded that it was his daughter who started it all.

You state: "I certainly don't need to hear yet another tirade about how the Enemy is Bad and America is Right. If we're so right, why do we seem to need so much reminding?"

Good question. I think it has to do with the fact that there is so much negativity toward what is happening in Iran. Just about every major news and info source is acting as if all Muslims will simply choose to live at peace with the world if those "bad Americans" will just go back where they came from.

Where is the balance?

You are correct that the basis for this war was misguided--but that doesn't change the historical reality of how Muslims have interacted with the world around them (just listen to the President of Iran--yikes).

I think articles such as the one written by Mr. Sampley are an attempt to bring some balance to the conversation. He didn't justify Bush, nor did he slam Ellis. He simply wrote about a part of our nation's history that is not often remembered. There is that famous quote about "those who forget history..."

Ellis did choose an odd time to bring the Quran into the forefront of our political conversation. It definitely has been used to justify the slaughter of those who have not chosen to swear by its tenets--including many Americans.

Cheers...Tim
